Smartness Methodology For Examinations
SMARTNESS METHODOLOGY FOR EXAMINATIONS
During the month of exams all over India and exams do
matter! So take an intelligent look of your own situation Vis-à-vis
examinations requirements. Don’t just go all out –day & night working like
a short sighted mediocre. Develop intelligence to meet the challenges of exams.
I do feel that every examinations be it State Universities, State Technical
Boards, IES,AIEEE,IIT-JEE,GATE, have predictable patterns look for that
patterns & develop your preparedness around that pattern.
PATTERN ANALYSIS:-
Let’s become clear what I mean by pattern. I would like to
take my first example from the field were .I am most comfortable with IES, AIEEE, IIT-JEE, GATE. What is the
new pattern that is most likely to be? But this analysis could be an useful
hint to any other examination be it be State Universities, State Technical
Boards, IES, AIEEE, IIT-JEE, GATE. Have a look at the following analysis. Types
of questions in the exams certainly would be objective which would be based on
subject knowledge with occasional add on knowledge through passage
comprehensions, assertions & reasoning, match the columns & many more.
REQUIRED SKILLS:-
Through knowledge of subjects, ability to solve numerical
based mainly on calculus, algebra, trigonometry and many more relevant
subjects. Ability to solve with speed & accuracy is very critical
requirement smart management of your attack on problems in examination hall is
equally important –How do you open your attack? One easy one first & then
difficult one later or vice versa. Your smartness in handling the stuck up
questions yet not letting yourself down in your momentum of attack on remaining
part of the paper & then return to left over portion etc. are some of the
factors where you have clear and settled approach.
FIX YOUR METHODS:-
You must fix your method as quickly & intelligently as
possible. Become very alert to your exam needs. But remain relaxed. Don’t come
under stress as that won’t help you. In any case you are going to perform to
your fullest possibility only when you are not under stress. Take care of your
wasteful habits. You can’t change & yet remain the same, though this is
what most people want. All of us desire improvement & many of us might be
knowing also what to change – But the act of changing our selves is difficult
that most of us give up very soon. Change means that we have to say “no” to
some of our own action which ostensibly give us pleasure. Be clear .Can you
chuck them off from your self improvement ? If yes then do that now without any
expectations of praise for that. You would go up in your own eyes 7 that’s what
which truly would & should matter the most.
TIME MANAGEMENT:-
Manage your time well let no circumstances or individual
waste your time. Some of the facts you would do well to take not in this regard
should be the following point:-
- Try to divide your time into blocks of 1 hour. To begin with spend 50 minutes studying followed by a 10 minute break.
- You may find that you can increase the time you spend studying. After a while when your concentration increases.
- Always plan for a lunch break & some sort of physical recreation. You can’t work if you are tired or mentally bored.
- To begin with, allocate harder tasks for the time when you are at your most productive. Some people work best in the morning others work best in the evening. You decide when.
TIME MANAGEMENT FOR REVISION
- Make a revision time table – It is not a difficult task use the time table to structure your revision.
- Fill in your own study time in the spaces along the time table.
- Alternatively make your own time table, use a diary or a wall chart that is specific to you.
- Use the time table provided as a guide if you don’t know how to construct one.
- Some people like to study early in the day, others prefer to study later on.
SOME IMPORTANT TEKK MANTRA’S FOR EXAM PREPARATION
- Do try to study at least 12-14 hours in 24 hours. As before exam last minute push matters a lot.
- Schedule breaks in your working day for food, relaxation& exercise, but not all at once. Too much work can be as unproductive as too little work.
- A good way is to start is to work 50 minute then have 10 minute breaks every hour.
- Be realistic- Don’t plan a schedule you can’t.
- Be disciplined- Stick to what you say you will do.
How To Tackle With Difficulty In Study
HOW TO TACKLE WITH DIFFICULTY IN STUDY
One of the most remarkable aspects of studying human history
is that it almost confirms the universal law of nature the most notable
achievers usually met with heart breaking obstacles before they triumphed! And
the essence of this principle hold good for success in educational life too.
For many students study is difficult because majority of subjects especially
Science & Math demands higher level of understanding & analysis than
what the students have been presently doing have done in the past. Added to this
is the widely known sickness of our main stream educational system. Things are
taught in schools and colleges so boringly, so mechanically within the bounds
of syllabus often under a set of very strict format of administrative
disciplines of “Does” & “Don’ts” that most of the students miss the sheer
joy of knowing the new stuff which are so much connected with our collective
lives. Students start fearing the tough subjects while they develop contempt
for the so called easy subject. This is the usual picture in our country save
for few exceptional institutions. So there is an inbuilt stress in curricular.
You can’t deal with the subjects with the subjects without effective resources
like good text books, competent teachers, effective study habits, on a regular
basis good physical & mental strength etc. You need to “work on” But the
situation doesn’t end here –you need to “work on” the subjects. History will
demand repeated revisions of main points, Physics especially mechanics &
electrodynamics will demand constant engagement with higher & higher levels
of problems , chemistry will demand understanding various theories & models
and remembering long list of key facts, Mathematics will demand repeated attack
on problem of different kinds though they may be at same level & so on
problems of different kinds. Each subjects has its own set of requirements
which you should know and be very sure that you need to “work on” different
subjects in regular and effective manner, no matter what is your financial, social,
or intellectual backgrounds. Things will not just happen to you- you will be
author of your success and of failure as well. You don’t have a third choice.
It just like cycling if you are not paddling you will not stay stationary there
for long you fall. So please accept the first important aspects of studying if
you ignore this you are going to create mess around you very soon practice
persistence.
“Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in &
day out”. Rajeshwar is a very
intelligent student studying science stream in Hyderabad. But he was not born
with the abilities what have now become his. There are students whose
intelligence may be superior to Rajeshwar but has on remarkable quality that
had set him apart from others he would persist. Let me tell you what it means
on day today basis. When college got over he would still be there doing
problems of physics or mathematics, when its recess hour, he would still be on
his seat working over some problems even if he had solved it earlier. Recently his
hand fracture & was on bed for a long time & he had to share many work
of his family because there was no one else to do that in a family yet his
performance did not falter. From outside no one would had sensed the deep &
strenuous daily struggle of a determined student for a common eye students like
Rajeshwar are termed as “exceptional” but this simplistic admiring approach
betrays the vast truth of day today struggle of a determined mind .
All success
stories are story of prolonged persistence however or whatever the situations
are so get it straight there is not any shortcut to success. Yes there are
definitely many versions of shortcuts for failures. It is not going to be
always easy. Manish is an amazing boy of Mumbai. His performance in maths
Olympiads had won him much admirations. But look beneath his common glory of
success- A problem of Physics is given in a class, when the class fails to
react on the possible solutions, the professor takes the marker pen to solve
that on the board when a soft voice of aback bench requests him to not solve
the problems or provide any hint. The professor agrees. The boy struggles for
the whole day. For a week & after 12 days he comes with two sets of
solution. This was the truth of Nachiket hard work – things were not easy even
for him in the beginning. I remember a line from the famous “Good Father” in
which the main character is advised against a risky strike on his opponent to
which he replies “ I am not interested in safe & easy things of life
because they don’t have much prospects.
CREATE PLAN:-
Planning brings focus to our efforts & focus creates
depths & depth gives us strength and we get success because of our
strength. Sheena was studying in Kota where here friends knew her because of
her “Potentials” but her performance in internal tests of institute was very
average. She used to give a peculiar picture- a sensitive mind, quick to grasp
but not hard enough to dig deep down the subjects. Her mother, being an alert
woman saw this in her & worked systematically to create a plan for everyday
so that was followed to the maximum possible extent. This started showing
effects – her performance in those internal tests improved dramatically. I will
conclude this piece with popular quote of management” If you are willing to do
more than you are paid to do, eventually you will be paid more than you do”.
Face The Exam Confidentaly
FACE THE EXAM CONFIDENTALY
It has been observed that students feel pressurized &
hence anxious due to the last minute hassle. A student needs to be prepared
emotionally, physically as well as intellectually. A good night’s sleep before
the test is important. What else? Here are the ways to take the exam
confidently.
BEFORE THE EXAM:-
Analyze the test papers to determine how you can improve
your results. Break study sessions into manageable time segments &
meaningful units. You’ll remember more if you study for short periods of time
say 45-60 minutes. Practice answering easy questions before the test. Form a
study group with other students in your class to discuss & quiz each other
on important topics.
DURING THE EXAM:-
Get to the test site early so you can select a seat,
organize your material & get relaxed. Be prepared with pencils, papers,
calculators, book, codes, etc. Survey the entire test before you answer any
questions. This will help you to get an overview of what is expected & to
strategize how you will take the test. Take a few deep breaths and to relax
tense muscles. Read directions carefully. Ask questions if you don’t understand
or need clarification. Answer the easiest question first to help your calm
down. Think before you write. Remember a good answer. Start with direct
response to the questions. Mentions the topics or areas described in the
question. Write legibly. Leave some space so you can add to your answer later.
When problem solving ask yourself. What I am being asked to find? What do I
need to know in order to find the answer? What information has been provided
that will help me to find the answer? What steps should I follow to solve the
problem? Does the answer make sense. Keep an eye on the clock. Make sure you’ll
have time to complete the test sections with the highest value if not the
entire test.
AFTER THE EXAM:-
When you receive your test paper ,go over it to determine
area’s of strength & weakness in your test taking skills. If you have done
poorly learn from your mistakes. Always analyze your tests to determine how you
can improve future test results.
Developing Concentration Skills & Controlling Your Studies
DEVELOPING CONCENTRATION SKILLS & CONTROLLING YOUR
STUDIES
Think of the times when you were lost in something you enjoy
a sport, playing music, a good game, a movie. In all these situation you
attained total concentration. But at other times your mind wanders from one
thing to another. In fact outside distractions takes you away before you know
it. Concentration is the ability to direct your thinking. We all have the
ability to concentrate. But if you know the art of developing concentration you
can control your studies. For this you have to do some mental exercise.
BE HERE NOW:-
This deceptively strategy is probably the most effective.
When you notice your thoughts wandering astray say to yourself “ Be Here Now “
& gently bring your attention back to where you want it .
TAKE IT EASY:-
Do not constantly judge your progress. Take it easy on
yourself. Good practice is enough to say that you did it & that you are on
the road. The mind is always different & the practice unfolds over time
with many ups & down.
WORRY OR THINK TIME:-
Research has proven that people who use a very worry time
find themself 35 % less of the time within four weeks. Set aside a specific
time each day to think about the things that keep entering your mind &
interfering with your concentration. When you become aware of a distracting
thought, remind yourself that you have a special time to think about them. Let
the thought go, perhaps with “Be Here Now “. Keep your appointment to worry or
think about those distracting issue eg. Set 4.30 to 5.00 p.m. as your worry
think time. When your mind is side tracked into worrying during the day, remind
yourself that you have a special time for worrying. Then let the thought go for
the present & return your focus to your immediate activity. Maximize your
energy energy level when is your energy level at its highest? When are your low
energy times. Study your most difficult courses at Sharpest early in the
morning. Study your most difficult course then later in the evening. Work on
your easier courses or the ones you enjoy the most. Most of the students put
off the tough studies until later in the evening when they become tired &
it is more difficult to concentrate. Reverses that study hard subjects at peak
energy times easier one later. This alone can help to improve your
concentration visualize. As an exercise before you begin studying think of
those times when concentration is not a problem for you no matter what
situation. Now try to feel or image yourself in that moment. Repeat before each
study session.
CONCENTRATION & MEMORY:-
Concentration & Memory work together but one doesn’t
lead to other. To concentrate is to direct your mental powers or your efforts
towards a particular activity, subject or problem. Memory is the ability to
remember information, experiences & people. There are some specific skills
that can be learned to enhance both concentration & memory. Practicing
these skills is likely to improve one’s success as a student. Good
concentration will enhance memory. If we only practice skills that improve our
memory but never look at factors that enhance concentration our efforts will
only be marginally successful.
CRESOURCER MANTRA
- Get a dedicated space, chair, table, lighting & environment.
- While studying, avoid your cellphone or television.
- Put up a sign to avoid being disturbed or interrupted.
- If you like music in the background OK But don’t let it be distraction.
- Before begin studying , take a few minutes to summarize a few objectives, gather what you will need .
- Changing the subject you study every one to two hours for variety.
- Then take regular, scheduled breaks that fit you.Do something different what you have been doing .
