Basic Principles of Asphalt Compaction

Rolled asphalts are divided into base courses, asphalt binder courses and asphalt wearing courses.Asphalt concrete, stone mastic asphalt and porous asphalts are used for asphalt wearing courses. The laid mix must be compacted to such a degree that an increase in density or a reduction of porosity in the asphalt layer is achieved. On this air voids one must make sure that the demanded degree of compaction is reached and that the limit values for the void content are complied with. This results in an enhanced stability of the layers and thus in a higher resistance against deformation. Good compaction also has a positive effect on the wear resistance of the wearing course.
